Exercise Physiology for MCL Rehab at Chronic Gains
Exercise Physiology for MCL Rehab at Chronic Gains
Whether it happened during sport, a slip, or a sudden twist – an MCL injury can leave your knee feeling vulnerable and unstable. Without the right rehab, it may never fully recover. At Chronic Gains, our Exercise Physiologists help you rebuild strength, restore confidence, and return to daily movement or sport – safely and sustainably.

What Is an MCL Injury?
The medial collateral ligament (MCL) runs along the inner side of the knee and provides side-to-side stability. It’s most commonly injured by:
- Impact to the outside of the knee
- Twisting or changing direction under load
- Repetitive strain in sport or manual work
Common symptoms:
- Pain or tenderness along the inner knee
- Swelling and stiffness
- Knee instability or “buckling” during walking
- Difficulty squatting, pivoting, or climbing stairs
MCL injuries range from mild (Grade I) to complete tears (Grade III). Most can be treated without surgery if supported by proper rehabilitation.
How Exercise Physiology Helps
Our MCL rehab programs are personalised to your injury severity, mobility level, and goals – whether that’s getting back to sport, work, or just walking without fear.
Early-Stage Support & Range of Motion Work
We use controlled movement to reduce stiffness and swelling, while protecting the healing ligament.
Strengthening the Support Network
Targeting muscles like the quads, glutes, hamstrings, and adductors helps restore full knee control.
Balance, Stability & Gait Retraining
Exercises that challenge your balance improve confidence and reduce risk of future injury.
Sport or Work-Specific Drills
For active clients, we simulate real-life or sport scenarios (e.g. directional changes, controlled pivots).
Long-Term Injury Prevention
We teach proper movement strategies, warm-ups, and training progressions to protect your knees long-term.
